The world of music has somehow shaped itself to be a man's world in recent years. Being a mostly male-dominated industry, there's no shortage to tales from women in the industry that have struggled to be taken seriously as a musician.


However, many kickass women have made a name for themselves and risen to fame despite the difficulties, influencing the shape of the industry today. With Women's History Month coming to an end, it's time to reflect on some newer female artists who are making their voices heard.


Doechii

Doechii is an up-and-coming hip hop rap artist who has recently won a Grammy for her album ‘Alligator Bites Never Heal’, providing a new, refreshing take on the genre.

Her first hit was in 2021 after the song 'Yucky Blucky Fruitcake' shot to fame through TikTok, which was followed by an EP called 'She/Her/Black Bitch' the next year. Since then, Doechii has reached huge commercial success, with nothing but potential for future albums to continue breaking barriers.

Song vibe: Lighthearted and fun with funky instrumentation; however, the deeper meaning to the song hints at the freedom in being allowed to make whatever she wants and still remaining a success.



Faye Webster

Faye Webster is an indie folk artist who creates music that has a soft, warm vibe. She first started to gain a platform in 2019 with her album 'Atlanta Millionaires Club', which saw success from indie lovers. Her next album, 2021's 'I know I’m funny haha', reached even greater levels of love from fans. Though her lyrics spark thoughts of love and intimacy, it is said that she favours her steel pedal guitar, which is featured in a vast number of her tracks, most when writing songs!

Song vibe: A haunting song mixing the intimacies of love and dating with a beautiful piano melody, Webster plays with the song's tempo to create a whirlwind of emotion.



Greentea Peng

Greentea Peng has an incredibly chill vibe to her songs, inspiring feelings of peace and feeding the soul. Born and raised in South-east London, but paying homage to her roots, she writes about her identity, spirituality, and humanity. She also advocates for people in need and volunteers regularly, hosting supper nights for fans in order to raise money for a variety of charities whilst killing it as a mother.

Song vibe: The song features a chill vibe that has many different layers of instruments that blend perfectly together. She uses a Rhodes, a classic soul drum beat, and a double bass to create a sick groove and makes you really feel the song.



Kittie

Starting the band when they were teenagers, Kittie has continued to outdo themselves when it comes to solidifying their place in the rock industry. Their groove-heavy songs capture the essence of metal in every track whilst still paying homage to their femininity. Figuring out their sound from a young age, Kittie hasn't strayed too off-path from their initial sound, releasing banger after banger since their 2001 debut EP 'Paperdoll'.

Song vibe: The bridge holds a very interesting change in feel compared to the rest of the song, with abstract lyrics that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. This song truly hits you hard and leaves you wanting more.



Laufey

Laufey has risen to fame lately for her jazz pop music, regularly going viral on social media as her music is used in trending videos. Her songs are commonly about heartbreak and not having someone to love and provide a peaceful and beautiful melody to accompany such vulnerable lyrics. She is also an avid TikToker who has perfected her relationship with her fans through posting relatable videos documenting her life as a young woman.

Song vibe: Equal parts alluring and gutwrenching, the song is about the sadness of a partner not truly loving you for who you are due to the image they've created of you in their own head.

Recently rebranding with the release of her latest album 'Brat', Charli XCX created a hyperpop medley of tracks that gained immense popularity and grew to become the trend of the summer. With the world embracing the 'brat summer', Charli has continued to grow a lot more ever since, with hard bass lines solidifying her place at the top of the club scene.
