On the 12th of November, Portsmouth’s Climate Justice Coalition hosted a vital Climate March in Guildhall Square in the wake of this year’s COP27. “We are so frustrated with the whole COP27 process” stated Jon Woods, a Socialist Workers' Party representative. “We see no action; just talking and nothing happening.”
The march was largely motivated by the party’s desire for world leaders to stop talking and start acting. The protest in Portsmouth is just one of many climate marches which have happened around the country in the last few months.
“The government needs to stop just talking about targets and start doing actual cuts of carbon emissions. We need to nationalise the energy industries so that we can transition away from fossil fuels into renewable energy.” Woods also states that in this process, jobs need to be protected so those working in the oil and gas industry aren’t left unemployed. Instead, they should be given the opportunity to access climate friendly jobs, so no one has to suffer.
