Students Feel "Unsafe" on Nights Out After Stabbings

Written by Charlotte Anderson

Portsmouth students are worried about the safety of their city following several serious attacks in and around the main nightclubs.

In the most recent attack on Saturday night, four men were stabbed or slashed in Tokyo Joe’s – and had to be taken to hospital with “serious” injuries. Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident at 9:48pm, while the shocking news spread rapidly on social media.

Although committee members are always quick to look out for their fellow students, and a man has already been charged in connection with the incident, societies are still having their doubts about the usual weekly socials.

Film student and President of Lacrosse, Tom Hattam, said he and his housemates feel “unsafe in the city” after the stabbings.

He told us: “I think the recent stabbings are awful, especially as they happened on a night when a lot of students would normally be out.”

Societies do have measurements in place, however, to make sure their members feel supported and looked after, especially during a night out.

Tom said: “Everyone ensures that you don’t go home alone and every club has a welfare officer – ours is Lauren and she’s in charge of making sure people are okay outside of training.”

Police enquiries into the incident on Saturday are ongoing.

Tokyo Joe’s management told The News: “We’re currently assisting Hampshire Constabulary with their investigations after an incident on Saturday night.

“We hope the evidence provided to the police will result in a successful conviction and lengthy sentence.”
